Over the last five years, Zinger Hardware in Austin, Texas, has been hiring students from the Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired for short-term work-study programs. When Zinger Hardware CEO Michael Ferweda heard about TSVBI’s initiatives to help their students increase their navigation, interaction and mobile skills, he know that his store was the perfect place for them.
Over a six week period, students have the opportunity to work on a number of different tasks, from interacting with customers and selling products, to stocking shelves and even assembling goods and machinery. The students interview with Ferweda before starting at the store and he works to place them in the most fitting and productive roles.
