LOVELAND — Michael Gillette-Ortiz has been watching the news and social media intently since Hurricane Maria started threatening Puerto Rico, where his sister, elderly mother and other relatives live. Now he’s collecting supplies for a trip to the battered island where he grew up.

“I’m just one guy; I’m going to go help my family and try to do what I can,” he said Thursday as he made plans to fly to Puerto Rico.

Gillette, a longtime Loveland resident, recently moved to Longmont. He said he has received sporadic text messages from his sister, so he knows she and their mom are OK.

The U.S. territory in the Caribbean took a direct hit Wednesday morning from the Category 4 storm, which left the island devastated, flooded and without power.
