Friday’s fire at Flint Hardware on Pleasant Street brought forth a lot of emotions among past and present Flint residents. There’s still plenty of commercial activity on Pleasant Street, but a lot of people remember a busier Flint, and a lot of them remember businesses long gone from Pleasant Street.

Pulling a volume of The Herald News from 1960, a quick look at the ads brings back memories.

In that year, the Royal Department Store was still doing business at 1430 Pleasant St., in the heat of the Flint. A man’s suit would cost you $39.50, and the store was open until 9 p.m. on Fridays.
