A unique culture is the be-all and end-all of Amazon’s excellence. As founder Jeff Bezos puts it in the just released shareholder letter, staying ahead of ever-rising customer expectations requires high standards widely deployed and all levels of detail.

“High standards are contagious,” Bezos writes. “Bring a new person onto a high standards team, and they’ll quickly adapt… I believe high standards are domain specific, and that you have to learn high standards separately in every arena of interest.” Bezos preaches to his 560,000 employees and his happy shareholders that  a culture of high standards is protective of all the ‘invisible’ but crucial work that goes on in every company.” Despite constant attacks from President Trump, Amazon is expected to report solid profits on Thursday.
